# The Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary

## Traditionally Attributed to St. Bonaventure

### A Fresh English Translation from the Latin

> **Edition status:** Reviewed English edition — revised September 2026. Published by The Marian Way.

## About This Work

This Marian Psalter invites the reader to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and seek her intercession through 150 devotional compositions modeled on the biblical Psalms, followed by eight canticles, a hymn, and a creed. It is a distinct devotional work, not a translation of the biblical Psalter or the Church’s official Psalter.

The traditional attribution to St. Bonaventure is retained without asserting certain authorship; the work is also known under the name Pseudo-Bonaventure. This complete English edition follows Peltier’s 1868 printed Latin, preserving its Marian language, parallelism, and abbreviated doxologies.

Read these praises in the Catholic faith: Mary’s maternal help draws all its power from Jesus Christ, the one Redeemer, and leads us into closer union with him. The Church gives her a unique honor, while reserving divine worship to God. This is the framework in which this edition invites readers to understand its fervent historical language. The [Source and Editorial Notes](SOURCE_AND_EDITORIAL_NOTES.md) explain the attribution, strong expressions, Marian creed, and documented translation choices.

# Preface

The Wise Man says:

> “Take hold of her, and she shall exalt you; you shall be glorified by her when you have embraced her. She shall give to your head an increase of graces, and a glorious crown shall protect you.”[^preface-1]

Glory to God in the highest, thanksgiving, and the voice of praise! At one time through prophetic mysteries, at another through oracles sent down from heaven, now through the reading of the Gospel, and now through the apostolic company, in many and various ways he most sincerely invites and urges us to honor the Virgin Mary, Queen of heaven and of the angels, so that through her holy merits—worthy of all esteem—he may snatch us from the prisons of hell and enroll us in the angelic host.

Although Solomon spoke the words above concerning Wisdom, the Holy Spirit nevertheless turns them, in a mystical sense, toward the surpassing Virgin Mary. In these words he entices you, my dearest friends, to love her; by various promises he draws and soothes your hearts toward embracing her. He assigns to you four wonderful gifts that you will obtain if so excellent a maiden is joined to you by a spiritual bond and embraced by you, with great reverence and devotion, in the arms of fervent desire. First, she brings you exaltation: “She shall exalt you.” Second, glorification: “You shall be glorified by her.” Third, an abundance of graces: “She shall give to your head an increase of graces.” Fourth, the unfading crown of perpetual flourishing: “A glorious crown shall protect you.”

Therefore I beg you, my dearest and most longed-for friends, not to reject so noble and beautiful a Virgin, nor to despise Mary, so wondrous and venerable a Virgin and Queen. If she sees herself despised by you, I do not say only that you will be deprived of such gifts, but that—God forbid—you may incur everlasting evils.

Accordingly, stretch forth your minds to serve her; prepare your hearts to praise and glorify her; loosen your tongues, and hasten with ready service to please her. Be assured that by drawing near to her you will remain more devout; by her touch, more pure; and by her embrace, more richly endowed and more radiant with virtue and grace.

And so, to give you some occasion for obtaining such great blessings, I send you this Psalter of the most holy Virgin. It was composed and fashioned from the small spark of my meager understanding, by her grace and help. In it you will exalt her with various praises: now her virginity and chastity, now her fruitfulness and holiness, and now her generosity or mercy. There you will extol her as full of every grace, filled with all knowledge, and enlightened by all wisdom and understanding. There you will bless the fruit of her glorious womb, the members of her holy body, and the prerogatives of her soul, mighty in every holiness. There, in praise of her, you will call upon the choirs of angels and saints, the nations of mankind, the islands of the peoples, heaven, the beauty of the heavenly lights, and the whole world.

There you will ask her to destroy the strength of spiritual enemies; to obtain for you the forgiveness of sins; to render the terrible Judge favorable toward you; to illumine your end by her presence; and to obtain for you joys that shall remain without end.

Therefore, my dearest friends, receive gratefully this very little gift of mine, first offered to you. Strive to draw fruit from it, and in it praise the Mother of God more often. Perhaps in her great kindness she will turn her loving face toward you, receive you into her love, revive and refresh your souls in this present life, and in future glory place upon your heads a crown of precious stone.

[^preface-1]: Proverbs 4:8–9, in the Latin form quoted by the author.

## Psalm 1

Blessed is the man who loves your name, O Virgin Mary: your grace will strengthen his soul.
As in fertile ground watered by springs: you will bring forth in him the fruit of righteousness.
Blessed are you among women: because of the faith of your holy heart.
For you surpass all women in bodily beauty: you surpass the angels and archangels in the excellence of holiness.
Your mercy and grace are proclaimed everywhere: God has blessed the works of your hands.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 2

Why have our enemies raged: and plotted vain things against us?
May your right hand protect us, O Mother of God: like a fearsome battle line, confounding and destroying them.
Come to her, you who labor and are troubled: and she will give rest to your souls.
Draw near to her in your temptations: and may the serenity of her countenance steady you.
Bless her with all your heart: for the earth is full of her mercy.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 3

O Lady, how many are those who trouble me! In your tempest you will pursue and scatter them.
Loose the bonds of our wickedness: remove the burdens of our sins.
Have mercy on me, O Lady, and heal my infirmity: take away the sorrow and anguish of my heart.
Do not deliver me into the hands of my enemies: and on the day of my death strengthen my soul.
Lead me to the haven of salvation: and restore my spirit to my Maker and Creator.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 4

When I called upon you, you heard me, O Lady: and from your lofty throne you deigned to remember me.
From those who roar, ready to devour me: and from the hands of those who seek me, your grace will deliver me.
For your mercy and tenderness are gracious: toward all who invoke your holy name.
Blessed are you forever, O Lady: and your majesty endures from age to age.
Glorify her, all you nations, with all your strength: and let all peoples of the earth extol her magnificence.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 5

Give ear to my words, O Lady: and do not turn the beauty of your countenance away from me.
Turn our mourning into joy: and our tribulation into rejoicing.
Let our enemies fall before our feet: by your power may their heads be crushed.
Let every tongue bless you: and all flesh confess your holy name.
For your spirit is sweeter than honey: and your inheritance surpasses honey and the honeycomb.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 6

O Lady, do not let me be rebuked in the fury of God: nor judged in his wrath.
For the honor of your name, O Lady: may the fruit of your glorious womb be gracious to us.
From the gate of hell and the depths of the abyss: deliver us by your holy prayers.
May the everlasting gates be opened to us: that we may proclaim your wonders forever.
For neither the dead nor those who are in hell will praise you, O Lady: but those who, through your grace, obtain eternal life.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 7

My Lady, I have hoped in you: deliver me from my enemies, O Lady.
Close the mouth and teeth of the lion: bind the lips of those who persecute me.
Do not delay, for your name’s sake: to show us your mercy.
May the splendor of your countenance shine upon us: that our conscience may be preserved before the Most High.
If the enemy persecutes my soul, O Lady, may I be strengthened by your help: lest he brandish his sword against me.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 8

O Lady, our Lord has become our brother: and our Savior.
As fire in the bush and dew upon the fleece: so the eternal Word of God descended into you.
Made fruitful by the Holy Spirit: you were overshadowed by the power of the Most High.
Blessed be your most pure conception of Christ: blessed be your virginal childbearing.
Blessed be the purity of your flesh: blessed be the sweetness of your merciful heart.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 9

I will praise you, O Lady, with my whole heart: and among the peoples I will proclaim your praise and glory.
For glory and thanksgiving are due to you: and the voice of praise.
Sinners will find grace with God: through you, the finder of grace and salvation.
May humble penitents breathe again in hope of pardon: heal the wounds of their hearts.
In the beauty of peace and abundant rest: you will feed us after the labor of our pilgrimage.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 10

In the Lady I trust: because of the sweet mercy of her name.
Her eyes look upon the poor: and her hands are stretched out to the orphan and the widow.
Seek her from your youth: she will glorify you before the peoples.
May her mercy take away the multitude of our sins: and bestow on us an abundance of merits.
Stretch out your arm to us, O glorious Virgin: and do not turn your glorious countenance away from us.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 11

Save me, O Mother of beautiful love: fountain of clemency and sweetness of tender mercy.
You alone range over the circuit of the earth: to come to the aid of those who invoke you.
Beautiful are your ways: and peaceful are your paths.
In you shines the beauty of chastity: the light of righteousness and the splendor of truth.
Clothed with sunlight as with a garment: you shine beneath a radiant crown of twelve stars.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 12

How long, O Lady, will you forget me: and not deliver me in the day of tribulation?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Crush him with the power of your might.
Open the eyes of your mercy: lest our enemy prevail against us.
We magnify you, finder of grace: through whom the ages are restored.
Exalted above the choirs of angels: pray for us before the throne of God.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 13

Our foolish adversary said in his heart: “I will pursue and overtake him, and my hand will slay him.”
Arise, O Lady; forestall him and cast him down: destroy all his endeavors.
The sun and moon marvel at your beauty: the angelic powers serve and minister to you.
By your most gentle touch the sick are healed: at your rosy fragrance the dead revive.
O Virgin Mother of God, he whom the whole world cannot contain: enclosed himself within your womb when he became man.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 14

O Lady, who will dwell in the tabernacle of God: or who will rest with the elders of the people?
The poor in spirit and the clean of heart: the meek, the peacemakers, and those who mourn.
Remember us, O Lady, and speak good things on our behalf: and turn the indignation of your Son away from us.
Let us sinners embrace Mary’s footsteps: and cast ourselves down at her blessed feet.
Let us hold fast to her and not let her go: until we have merited to be blessed by her.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 15

Preserve me, O Lady, for I have hoped in you: and impart to me drops of your grace.
Your virginal womb and inward parts: brought forth the Son of the Most High.
Blessed be your breasts: with whose divine milk you nourished the Savior.
Proclaim the praises of the glorious Virgin: all you who have found grace and mercy with her.
Give magnificence to her name: and praise forever her conception of Christ and childbearing.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 16

Hear my righteous plea and my love, O Lady: remove my tribulation from me.
I will praise you with a voice of rejoicing: when you magnify your mercy toward me.
Imitate her, holy virgins of God: as Agnes, Barbara, Dorothy, and Catherine imitated her.
Honor her with the voice of your lips: by doing so Agatha, Lucy, Margaret, and Cecilia received her grace.
She will give you the Father’s Son as your Bridegroom: and a crown of lilies from Paradise, shining beyond compare.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 17

I will love you, O Lady of heaven and earth: and among the nations I will invoke your name.
Give praise to her, you who are troubled in heart: and she will strengthen you against your enemies.
Let the grace of your breasts fall upon us, O Lady: from the flowing milk of your sweetness refresh the hearts of your children.
All you religious, honor her: for she is your helper and your special advocate.
Be our refreshment, O glorious Mother of Christ: for you are the wondrous support of the whole religious state.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 18

The heavens declare your glory: and the fragrance of your perfumes is spread among the nations.
Take heart in her, lost sinners: and she will lead you to the harbor of pardon.
With hymns and psalms and canticles, knock upon her heart: and she will let the grace of her sweetness fall upon you.
Glorify her before the throne of God, you righteous: for through the fruit of her womb you have worked righteousness.
Praise her, highest heavens: and let all the earth glorify her name.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 19

May you hear us, O Lady, in the day of tribulation: and turn your merciful countenance toward our prayers.
Do not cast us away at the hour of our death: but help the soul when it has left its body.
Send an angel to meet it: by whom it may be defended from its enemies.
Show it the most serene Judge of the ages: who, for your sake, may grant it pardon.
May it feel your consolation amid its punishments: and grant it a place among the elect of God.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 20

In your strength, O Lady, our heart will rejoice: and in the sweetness of your name our soul will be consoled.
Send us wisdom from your throne: by which we may be gently enlightened in all truth.
Grant us the grace to abstain from carnal desires: that the light of grace may arise in our hearts.
How sweet are your words to those who love you, O Lady! How delightful are the falling drops of your graces!
I will sing glory and honor to you: and I will glory in your name forever.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 21

May God, my God, look upon me through your merits, O Mary ever Virgin.
My Lady, I cried to you by day and by night: and you showed your mercy to your servant.
For I have hoped in your mercy: you have taken everlasting reproach away from me.
My enemies mocked me on every side: but beneath the shadow of your hand you gave me blessed refreshment.
Let the families of the nations adore you: and all the orders of angels glorify you.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 22

The Lord shepherds me, O Virgin Mother of God: for you have turned his loving countenance toward me.
Blessed are your most radiant eyes: may you deign to turn them mercifully toward us sinners.
Blessed be the light and splendor of your face: blessed be the grace of your countenance.
Blessed be the mercy of your hands: blessed be the flowing of your virginal milk.
May your apostles and the prophets of God bless you: may the martyrs, confessors, and virgins sing to you.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 23

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof: but you, most holy Mother, reign with him forever.
You are clothed in glory and beauty: every precious stone is your garment and covering.
The splendor of the sun is above your head: the beauty of the moon is beneath your feet.
Gleaming stars adorn your throne: the morning stars glorify you continually.
Remember us, O Lady, in your good pleasure: and make us worthy to glorify your name.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 24

To you, O Lady, I have lifted up my soul: through your prayers I will not be put to shame at the judgment of God.
May my adversaries not mock me: for those who rely upon you are strengthened.
May the snares of death not prevail against me: nor the camps of the wicked hinder my steps.
Crush their assault by your power: and meet my soul with gentleness.
Be my guide to the homeland: and deign to gather me into the company of angels.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 25

Judge me, O Lady, for I have departed from my innocence: but because I have hoped in you, I will not grow weak.
Burn my heart with the fire of your love: and bind my loins with the girdle of chastity.
For your mercy and your clemency are before my eyes: and I have delighted in the sound of your praise.
O Lady, I have loved the beauty of your face: and venerated your holy majesty.
Give praise to her name, for it is holy: let her wonders be proclaimed forever.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 26

O Lady, may the splendor of your face be my illumination: and may the serenity of your grace shine upon my mind.
Lift up my head: and I will sing a psalm to your name.
Do not turn your face away from me: for from my youth I have desired your beauty and loveliness.

## Psalm 29

I will exalt you, O Lady, for you have received me: you will deliver me from my wicked adversary.
Turn to me and give me life; bring me back from the gates of death: and from the waves of tribulation that surround me.
By the authority and magnificence of your right hand: crush and scatter all my adversaries.
And I will offer you a sacrifice of praise: and with deeper devotion exalt your glory.
Rejoice, O heavens, and be glad, O earth: for Mary will console her servants and have mercy on her poor.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

I will bless the Lady at all times: and her praise will never fail from my mouth.
Magnify her with me, all you: who have been nourished with the honey and milk of her refreshment.
In dangers and doubtful matters, invoke her: and in your necessities you will find help and sweet relief.
Take the example of her manner of life: and emulate her zeal for charity and humility.
Because you were so humble, O Lady: you compelled the uncreated Word to take flesh from you.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

Judge those who harm me, O Lady: arise against them and vindicate my cause.
My soul will rejoice in you: and I, your devoted servant, will exult in your benefits.
Heaven and earth are full of your grace and sweetness: on every side you have always bound us with your benefits.
Wherever we go: the bounty of your virginal womb meets us.

O Lady, your mercy is in heaven: and your grace is poured out upon the earth.
Power and might are in your arm: strength and fortitude in your right hand.
Blessed be your dominion above the heavens: blessed be your magnificence upon the earth.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

Better is a little with her grace: than treasures of silver and precious stones.
May glory be yours forever, O Queen of heaven: and at no time forget us.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Psalm 37

O Lady, may the Lord not rebuke me in your fury: obtain pardon for our sins.

I will give thanks to you, O Lady, for through you the Lord has been appeased toward me, and you have consoled me.

Behold, O Lady, my savior; I will act confidently in you and will not be afraid.

For you are my strength and my praise in the Lord, and you have become salvation for me.

I will draw waters with joy from the stream, and I will always invoke your name.

Make known among the peoples the mighty deeds of our Lady, for her name is greatly exalted.

Exalt and praise her, all humankind, for the Lord my God has given you such a mediatrix.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Hezekiah (Isaiah 38)

In the midst of my days I said: I will go to Mary, that she may reconcile me to Christ.

I sought the remainder of my years in the bitterness of my soul.

My family was taken from me, for father and mother and everything else abandoned me; but Mary took me up.

I hoped in her morning, evening, and midday; like a lion she crushed all the bones of my sins.

And you, O Lady, rescued my soul from perishing, and my only life from the power of the dog.

O Lady, save me, and I will sing your praise all the days of my life, O loving Mother of my Lord.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Hannah (1 Samuel 2)

My heart has rejoiced in the Lord, and my heart has been exalted in my Lady.

For he who is mighty has done great things for me through Mary his Mother.

There is none holy as our Lady, who alone has surpassed all women.

Let old things therefore depart from our mouths, and let us speak in new tongues.

Exalt and praise Mary, O Sion and Jerusalem, for she is greatest among the ladies of Israel.

She makes poor and makes rich; she humbles and exalts.

Higher than heaven and broader than earth is this Lady of ours.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Miriam (Exodus 15)

Let us sing to the Lady, the glorious Virgin Mary; let us bless her in hymns and praises.

Our Lady—almighty after God is her name—cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea.

Your right hand, O Lady, has been magnified in strength, for in the multitude of your mercy you laid low my adversaries.

You delivered me from the lion’s mouth, O Lady, and received me as a mother receives her newborn child.

O my dearest Lady, shelter me like a hen beneath your wondrous protection.

I am wholly yours, and all that I have is yours, O Virgin blessed above all.

I will set you as a seal upon my heart, for your love is strong as death.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Habakkuk (Habakkuk 3)

O Lady, I heard the report of you and was astonished; I considered your works and stood in awe.

O Lady, you revived your work in the midst of the years.

I will give thanks to you, O Lady, for you hid these things from the wise and revealed them to little ones.

Your glory covered the heavens, and the earth is full of your mercy.

You went forth, O Virgin, for the salvation of your people, for salvation with your Christ.

O blessed one, our salvation has been placed in your hands; in your kindness remember our poverty.

Whomever you will, that person shall be saved; but the one from whom you turn your face goes to destruction.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Moses (Deuteronomy 32)

Hear, O heavens, what I shall say of Mary; let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

Magnify her with me always, and let us exalt her name forever and ever.

O wicked and perverse generation, acknowledge our Lady as your savior.

Is she not your mother, who took possession of you and brought you forth in faith?

If you abandon her, you are not a friend of the supreme King, for he will not save you without her.

Would that you were wise and understood, and would provide for your last end!

As an infant cannot live without a nurse, so without our Lady you cannot have salvation.

Let your soul therefore thirst for her; hold her and do not let her go until she has blessed you.

Let your mouth be filled with her praise; sing of her magnificence all the day.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of the Three Young Men (Daniel 3)

Bless the glorious Lady, all you works of creation; praise and exalt her above all forever.

Bless our Lady, O angels; bless our Lady, O heavens.

Let every creature bless our Lady, whom the King has willed to be blessed in this way.

Blessed are you, O daughter of the highest King, who surpass every lily in fragrance.

Blessed are you, crown of all ladies; blessed are you, glory of Jerusalem.

Your fragrance is like that of a full field which the Lord has blessed; it overflows into those who bless you, watering all their inmost parts.

Whoever blesses you, O blessed Virgin, may that person be blessed forever.

Whoever curses you, O most radiant rose, may that person be accursed.

May an abundance of wine and oil never depart from the house of your servants.

At your name let every knee bend, in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.

Let us bless the God who created you; blessed be both parents who begot you.

Blessed are you, O Lady, in heaven and on earth, praiseworthy, glorious, and exalted above all forever.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

## Canticle in the Manner of Zechariah (Luke 1)

Blessed are you, O Lady and Mother of my God, the God of Israel, who through you has given life and accomplished the redemption of his people.

And he has raised up a horn of salvation through your chastity, in the house of David his servant.

As he spoke by the mouth of Isaiah and his other holy prophets.

Grant us salvation from our enemies, O Virgin of virgins, and give us peace from the hand of all who hate us.

Show mercy to our parents and to us, and remember the covenant of almighty God.

The oath that he swore to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

Thus, delivered without fear from the hand of our enemies, we will serve him in peace.

In holiness and righteousness before you all our days.

And you, Mary, shall be called the prophet of God, for you knew that he had looked upon the humility of his handmaid.

Through whom he gave his people knowledge of salvation in the forgiveness of sins.

Through the depths of your abundant mercy, visit us, O Morning Star rising from on high.

Illumine the darkness of those who sit in the shadow of death, and deign to pour upon them the light of your most beloved Son.

Have mercy, O Mother of mercies, upon us miserable sinners, who have neglected to repent of past sins and who each day commit many sins of which we must repent.

*Glory be to the Father, etc.*

# Hymn in the Manner of the *Te Deum*

## *Te Matrem Dei Laudamus* — We Praise You, Mother of God

We praise you, Mother of God; we confess you as the Virgin Mary.

All the earth venerates you as the spouse of the eternal Father.

All angels and archangels, thrones and principalities, serve you faithfully.

All powers, all the virtues of the heavens, and all dominions obey you.

All choirs stand beside you rejoicing, with the cherubim and seraphim.

All angelic creation proclaims to you with unceasing voice:

Holy, holy, holy Mary, Mother of God, Mother and Virgin.

Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of the glory of the fruit of your womb.

The glorious choir of apostles praises you as the Mother of its Creator.

The white-robed company of blessed martyrs glorifies you as the Mother of Christ.

The glorious army of confessors calls you the temple of the Trinity.

The lovely choir of holy virgins proclaims you as the example of virginity and humility.

The whole heavenly court honors you as Queen.

Throughout the world the Church joins in celebrating you by invoking you:

Mother of the divine Majesty;

You, the venerable and true Mother of the heavenly King, holy, sweet, and loving.

You are the Lady of the angels; you are the gate of Paradise.

You are the ladder of the heavenly kingdom and of glory.

You are the bridal chamber; you are the ark of mercy and grace.

You are the fountain of mercy; you are the spouse and Mother of the eternal King.

You are the temple and sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, the noble banqueting hall of the whole most blessed Trinity.

You are the mediatrix of God and lover of mankind, the heavenly enlightener of mortals.

You are the champion of those who struggle, the advocate of the poor, the one who has mercy, and the refuge of sinners.

You are the dispenser of gifts; you scatter and terrify demons and the proud.

You are the Lady of the world, the Queen of heaven, and, after God, our only hope.

You are the salvation of those who invoke you, the harbor of the shipwrecked, the consolation of the miserable, and the refuge of the perishing.

You are the Mother of all the blessed, the full joy—after God—of all the citizens of heaven, and their consolation.

You are the one who advances the righteous and gathers those who wander, the promise of the patriarchs.

You are the truth of the prophets, the proclamation and teacher of the apostles, and the teacher of the evangelists.

You are the strength of the martyrs, the example of confessors, and the honor and festal joy of virgins.

To deliver exiled mankind, you received the Son of God into your womb.

Through you, when the ancient enemy had been conquered, the kingdoms of heaven were opened to the faithful.

You sit with your Son at the right hand of the Father.

O Virgin Mary, pray for us to him whom we believe will come to judge us.

Therefore we beseech you: come to the aid of us, your servants, who have been redeemed by the precious blood of your Son.

O loving Virgin, grant that we may be rewarded with eternal glory together with your saints.

Save your people, O Lady, that we may share in the inheritance of your Son.

Rule us and keep us forever.

Day by day, O loving one, we salute you.

And we desire to praise you forever, with mind and voice.

Deign, sweet Mary, now and always to preserve us without sin.

Have mercy upon us, loving one; have mercy upon us.

May your great mercy be upon us, for in you, O Virgin Mary, we trust.

In you, sweet Mary, we hope; defend us forever.

Praise befits you, dominion befits you; to you belong power and glory forever and ever. Amen.

# A Creed in the Manner of the Athanasian Creed

Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold a firm faith concerning Mary.

Unless each person preserves this faith whole and inviolate, without doubt that person will perish forever.

For she alone, remaining a Virgin, bore her Son; she alone destroyed all heresies.

Let the Hebrew who says that Christ was born from Joseph’s seed be confounded and put to shame.

Let the Manichaean who says that Christ had a fictitious body be confounded.

Let everyone who says that he took this body from anywhere other than Mary grow pale.

For the same Son who is the Father’s only-begotten Son in his divinity is also the true only-begotten Son of the Virgin Mary.

In heaven without a mother; on earth without a father.

For just as the rational soul and flesh, by reason of their union, are truly born of a human being, so Christ, God and man, is truly born of the Virgin Mary.

He put on flesh from the Virgin’s flesh, for in this way it was fitting that the human race should be redeemed.

According to his divinity he is equal to the Father; according to his humanity he is less than the Father.

He was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, at the angel’s announcement; nevertheless, the Holy Spirit is not his father.

He was born into the world without suffering to the flesh of his Virgin Mother, for he was conceived without the pleasure of the flesh.

His Mother nursed him at a breast full from heaven.

Angels stood around him in place of midwives, announcing great joy to the shepherds.

He was adored by the Magi with gifts, driven by Herod in flight into Egypt, and baptized by John in the Jordan; he was betrayed, seized, scourged, crucified, died, and was buried.

He rose in glory and ascended into heaven.

He sent the Holy Spirit upon his disciples and upon his Mother.

At length he took her into heaven, and she sits at the right hand of her Son, never ceasing to beseech her Son for us.

This is the faith concerning the Virgin Mary. Unless each person believes it faithfully and firmly, that person cannot be saved.
