Why go to Jesus through Mary?

Because this is the path God chose when Jesus came to us. She is the Mother of God, the mother Jesus gave His disciples, and the creature entrusted with forming Christ’s members in the life of grace.

Mary holds the Child Jesus in a sunlit cloister.
To Jesus through Mary.

God chose to give Jesus through her.

The Father did not send the Son as an isolated apparition from heaven. The Word took flesh in Mary, received His blood from her, was carried by her, nursed by her, and lived in willing obedience beneath her roof. Her free fiat opened the human door through which salvation entered the world.

God did not need Mary by an absolute necessity; He chose her. That choice establishes the pattern of grace. The same Jesus who came to the world through her still desires to be formed in His members through her maternal action. Receiving her maternal help lets us follow the path He has opened.

And thus also it was that the knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. For what the virgin Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the virgin Mary set free through faith.

Jesus gave her to you from the Cross.

At the hour when every word cost Him suffering, Jesus looked upon Mary and the beloved disciple: “Behold, your son … Behold, your mother” (John 19:26–27). John then took her into his own home. The saints hear a personal command in that scene: receive the Mother of Jesus into the interior home of your prayer, choices, wounds, and hopes.

Christ’s gift asks for more than correct doctrine about Mary. A mother must be known, loved, listened to, and trusted. A disciple who keeps her at a respectful distance has not yet received the gift with John’s completeness.

Devotion to Mary is not optional.

St. Louis de Montfort states the claim without embarrassment: because God has willed Mary’s maternal role, devotion to her is necessary for reaching our final end and cannot be treated like one optional devotion among many. Read his argument in True Devotion §§39–43.

This does not mean every Catholic must have the same temperament, join the same association, or practice every private devotion. It means no Christian should choose to remain indifferent to the Mother of God. Every disciple needs a real filial relationship expressed in honor, trust, imitation, prayer, and a willingness to be led by her to Jesus.

“If devotion to the Most Blessed Virgin is necessary to all men simply to work out their salvation, it is still much more necessary to those who are called to a particular perfection…”

St. Louis de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin §43 (excerpt)

She never rivals Jesus.

Grace comes from Christ. Redemption was accomplished by Christ. Jesus is the one mediator whose sacrifice reconciles humanity to the Father. Mary’s entire maternal work depends upon Him and serves Him. That is exactly why confidence in her can be so complete: she has no separate kingdom, no rival plan, and no desire except the reign of her Son.

At Cana she notices the need, intercedes, and says, “Do whatever he tells you.” That sentence is the permanent rule of Marian devotion. The closer a soul draws to Mary, the more seriously it must take the commandments, the sacraments, the Cross, the Eucharist, and the salvation of others.

Moreover we proclaim the holy Virgin to be in strict truth the Mother of God. For inasmuch as He who was born of her was true God, she who bare the true God incarnate is the true mother of God.

Let devotion take root in your life.

Montfort rejects devotion that is merely critical, scrupulous, external, presumptuous, inconsistent, hypocritical, or self-interested. Rosaries said without any desire to abandon sin, a Scapular worn while refusing repentance, or praise of Mary that never becomes obedience cannot be the friendship she desires.

True devotion is interior because it rises from the heart; tender because it trusts her as a child; holy because it leads away from sin; constant because it survives dryness and difficulty; and disinterested because it loves Mary for God’s sake rather than only for favors. It is measured by the life it produces.

Let us therefore turn to her and, like her little children, throw ourselves into her lap with perfect confidence, at every moment and in every circumstance. Let us call this gentle mother to our aid, invoke her motherly love and, striving to imitate her virtues, keep a truly filial heart toward her.

Her motherly work is aimed at your salvation.

The saints speak urgently because eternal life is urgent. St. Alphonsus teaches that a servant who faithfully honors Mary and recommends himself to her will not be lost; he immediately describes such a servant as one who desires amendment. Mary’s mercy is not permission to stay far from God. It is the strong hand that draws a sinner to repentance and keeps a weak soul from despair.

Ask her for the graces that matter most: hatred of mortal sin, a good confession, perseverance in grace, fidelity to vocation, love of the Eucharist, courage in suffering, protection in temptation, and a holy death. These are a mother’s ambitions for her children.

Prepare to make a good confession: examine your conscience, seek contrition, and return to Christ with a sincere purpose of amendment.

Give her a definite place in your life today.

Love grows through acts. Begin with one attentive decade of the Rosary: one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and a Glory Be while meditating on a mystery of Jesus and Mary. Receive the Brown Scapular through proper enrollment. Choose your consecration date. Offer today’s unavoidable suffering. Reserve the next first Saturday for reparation.

Then persevere when novelty disappears. Speak to Mary in temptation. Thank her after grace. Ask what in your home, habits, media, relationships, and ambitions does not belong beneath her mantle. Let devotion become a covenant rather than an occasional mood.

“For, wherever You enter, You obtain the grace of conversion and sanctification, since it is through Your hands that all graces come to us from the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

St. Maximilian Kolbe, Solemn Act of Consecration

About this work and its sources

The Marian Way is an independent Catholic devotional project, created to help souls know and love Mary and follow her to Jesus. The project is responsible for the editorial introductions, the selection and labeling of excerpts, and the presentation of its English editions.

Our four complete books are translated from the sources identified in each edition’s notes. Quotations keep their author, work, and passage beside them. A source comparison checks an English passage against the text from which it was translated; it does not imply Church approval. Historical testimony and uncertain attributions are identified as such, and the complete book text remains available for context.

The reading companions distinguish the saints’ own words and received prayers from practical instructions written for this site. These materials support prayer and formation; sacramental questions belong with your priest or confessor.

Corrections

A useful correction identifies the page address, the exact sentence or book paragraph, and the original source that supports the change. This lets a wording or attribution question be checked in context. The source and edition notes below preserve the basis of our published texts.
