The year beneath her mantle

The Most Holy Name of Mary

Saint Alphonsus teaches confidence in the holy name of Mary, invoked with love in life and at death.

Enter the mystery

The sweetness of Mary’s name

The name of this Virgin mother is joy to the heart, honey to the mouth, melody to the ear of those devoted to her.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori, The Glories of Mary, Part I, Chapter X, O Sweet Virgin Mary (excerpt)

Contemplate with Mary

If then, my Brothers, Thomas à Kempis concludes, you seek to be consoled in every trouble, have recourse to Mary, invoke Mary, honour Mary, commend yourselves to Mary. With Mary rejoice, with Mary weep, with Mary pray, with Mary walk, with Mary seek Jesus; with Jesus and Mary at last desire to live and to die.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori, The Glories of Mary, Part I, Chapter X, quoting Thomas à Kempis (excerpt)

Hear the Fathers and Doctors

In dangers, in distress, in uncertainty, think of Mary; call upon Mary. Let her never leave your lips or your heart; and to obtain the help of her prayer, do not forsake the example of her life. Following her, you do not go astray; praying to her, you do not despair; thinking of her, you do not err. When she holds you, you do not fall; when she protects you, you do not fear; with her as guide, you do not grow weary; with her favour, you reach your destination.

In the night of this life she shines with the light of the virtues, to show the way of truth and lead to the harbor of salvation. She is indeed the gate of heaven, as Genesis 28 says: ‘Here,’ that is, in Mary, ‘is nothing other than the house of God and the gate of heaven.’ She is Jacob's ladder.

Pray with the saints

Most holy Virgin, obtain for us the love of prayer and of solitude, so that, detaching ourselves from the love of creatures, we may aspire to God alone and to Paradise, where we hope one day to see you and for ever to praise and love together with you your Son Jesus, world without end. Amen.
