The Gospel event

Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple in obedience to the Law. Simeon recognizes the Savior and foretells the sword that will pierce Mary’s soul.

Luke 2:22–35 (Gospel reference)

The offering of the Mother and Son

Mary offered her Son to death really, and being certain that the sacrifice of the life of Jesus which she then made was one day in fact to be consummated on the Altar of the Cross: so that in offering the life of her Son, Mary came, for the love she bore that Son, to sacrifice her whole self to God.

Contemplate with Mary

Let us go then to this divine Mother, if we would find Jesus; and let us go with great confidence.

Hear the Fathers and Doctors

Rejoice, then, you too, with that blessed old man and the aged Anna; go out to meet the Mother and the little Child. Let love overcome reserve, and affection drive away fear. Take the Infant into your arms and say with the bride: “I held him and will not let him go.” Rejoice with that most holy old man and sing: “Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace according to your word.”

Pray with the saints

Behold, O Mary, today I present myself to You, and offer myself wholly to your service, and for the little or much that remains to me to live on this earth; and together with You I renounce all Creatures, and dedicate myself entirely to the Love of my Creator. I consecrate to you then, O Queen, my mind, that it may think always of the Love which You deserve; my tongue, to praise you; my heart, to love you.
