Montfort’s direction for this phase
228. During the first week, they shall employ all their prayers and acts of piety in asking for knowledge of themselves and contrition for their sins, and they shall do everything in a spirit of humility. For this, they may, if they wish, meditate on what I have said of our evil depths, and regard themselves, during the six days of this week, only as snails, slugs, toads, swine, serpents, and goats; or else on these three sayings of Saint Bernard: Cogita quid fueris, semen putridum; quid sis vas stercorum; quid futurus sis, esca verminum [Consider what you were — putrid seed; what you are — a vessel of dung; what you will be — the food of worms]. They shall pray to Our Lord and his Holy Spirit to enlighten them, in these words: Domine, ut videam [Lord, that I may see]; or Noverim me [May I know myself]; or Veni, Sancte Spiritus [Come, Holy Spirit]; and they shall say every day the Litany of the Holy Spirit and the prayer that follows it, given in the first part of this work. They shall have recourse to the Most Blessed Virgin and shall ask her for this great grace, which must be the foundation of the others; and for this they shall say every day the Ave maris Stella and her litany.

True Devotion to Mary, paragraphs 126–130
This optional reading accompanies the phase; Montfort’s preparation instructions above remain the guide.
126. I have said that this devotion could very well be called a perfect renewal of the vows or promises of holy baptism. For every Christian, before his baptism, was the slave of the devil, because he belonged to him. In his baptism, by his own mouth or by that of his godfather and his godmother, he solemnly renounced Satan, his pomps, and his works, and took Jesus Christ for his Master and sovereign Lord, to depend on him in the capacity of a slave of love. This is what is done by this present devotion: one renounces (as is marked in the formula of the consecration) the devil, the world, sin, and oneself, and one gives oneself entirely to Jesus Christ by the hands of Mary. And one even does something more, for in baptism one ordinarily speaks by the mouth of another, namely by the godfather and godmother, and one gives oneself to Jesus Christ only by proxy; but in this devotion, it is by oneself, it is voluntarily, it is with full knowledge of what one is doing. In holy baptism one does not give oneself to Jesus Christ by the hands of Mary, at least not in an express manner, and one does not give to Jesus Christ the value of one’s good actions; one remains, after baptism, entirely free to apply it to whomever one wishes or to keep it for oneself; but by this devotion one gives oneself expressly to Our Lord by the hands of Mary, and consecrates to him the value of all one’s actions.
127. Men, says Saint Thomas, make a vow at holy baptism to renounce the devil and his pomps: In baptismo vovent homines abrenuntiare diabolo et pompis ejus. And this vow, says Saint Augustine, is the greatest and the most indispensable: Votum maximum nostrum quo vovimus nos in Christo esse mansuros [Our greatest vow, by which we have vowed to remain in Christ] (Epis. 59 ad Paulin). It is also what the canonists say: Praecipuum votum est quod in baptismate facimus [The chief vow is that which we make in baptism]. Yet who keeps this great vow? Who faithfully keeps the promises of holy baptism? Do not almost all Christians violate the fidelity they promised to Jesus Christ in their baptism? Whence can this universal disorder come, if not from the fact that men live in forgetfulness of the promises and engagements of holy baptism, and from the fact that almost no one ratifies by himself the contract of covenant which he made with God through his godfathers and godmothers!
128. This is so true that the Council of Sens, convoked by order of Louis the Debonair to remedy the disorders of Christians, which were great, judged that the principal cause of this corruption of morals came from the forgetfulness and the ignorance in which men lived of the engagements of holy baptism; and it found no better means whatsoever of remedying so great an evil than to bring Christians to renew the vows and promises of holy baptism.
129. The Catechism of the Council of Trent, faithful interpreter of the intentions of that holy council, exhorts parish priests to do the same thing and to bring their people to remember and to believe that they are bound and consecrated to Our Lord Jesus Christ as slaves to their Redeemer and Lord. Here are its words: Parochus fidelem populum ad eam rationem cohortabitur ut sciat[...] aequum esse nos ipsos, non secus ac mancipia Redemptori nostro et Domino in perpetuum addicere et consecrare [The parish priest shall exhort the faithful people in such a way that they may know... that it is just that we give over and consecrate ourselves forever to our Redeemer and Lord, no otherwise than as slaves] (Cat. Conc. Trid., pte I, c. 3)
130. Now, if the councils, the Fathers, and experience itself show us that the best means of remedying the disorders of Christians is to make them remember the obligations of their baptism and to make them renew the vows they made there, is it not reasonable that this be done at present in a perfect manner, by this devotion and consecration to Our Lord through his holy Mother? I say in a perfect manner, because in consecrating oneself to Jesus Christ one makes use of the most perfect of all means, which is the Most Blessed Virgin.

Prayer after the Litany of the Holy Spirit
Let us pray.
We beseech Thee, O Holy Spirit, descend with Thy light and consolation lovingly into our souls, enlighten our understanding, and consecrate the hearts which Thou hast sanctified as Thy temples. O Holy Spirit, come and bring us God’s blessing and peace; console us and all the afflicted, encourage and strengthen the weak; instruct and support the wavering; rouse the sinners to penance, and enkindle in their cold hearts the fire of divine love and a filial confidence in Thee, that all men, in peace and joy, may thankfully praise and adore Thee, together with the Father and the Son, one God, world without end. Amen.
